Homogeneous materials are critical to achieve performance for any transmissive element. Surfaces can be polished to very tight specifications, but if the material being used is not homogeneous, the part can easily fail the TWE specification. The homogeneity measurement is usually performed on a single sample from a particular boule (batch) of glass, but for nanometer-level wavefront requirements, might be required for every part before polishing the final surfaces.
